I know the feeling of trying to get an outfit together for a photo session and not having any idea where to start. I want to help eliminate some of the discomfort by giving you a little guide to help. Below I put together ideas to help you in your clothing selection process. By no means do you have to follow any of these, as I understand sometimes your vision may be totally different, but I at least want to provide it. :)
STYLING TIPS
- Give yourself ample time to raid your closest or shop. Prepare at least a week in advance and have everyone try their looks on before, checking for both comfort and coordination. Honestly, chances are you have everything you need already in your closet, and it's an outfit you already enjoy wearing.
- Coordinate and complement one another, but avoid matchy-matchy outfits. Show personality!
- Neutrals and colors found in nature always photograph the best. And when selecting colors, with the more soft muted tones. Bright colors can cast an unflattering tone on your skin.
- Avoid neon colors, bold prints and patterns, super bright colors, and logos.
- Moms, pick your outfit first and create the rest of the family looks off that.
- Long maxi or midi dresses photograph beautifully! If this is your style, go for it!
- If it's not something you are comfortable in, avoid it. Pick outfits you feel flatter you and bring confidence.
- Stick to no more than two patterns across the entire family. This will help avoid the prints and patterns taking over the images and becoming distracting.
- Dress appropriately for the environment your session is taking place in. At home session- avoid wearing shoes. Session in the woods- avoid stilettos. At the beach- barefoot is the way to go.
- Show your style and have fun with it!
- Know that it is okay to dress completely casual. Some of the best photos I have taken are of families in their every day favorite clothing, just being comfortable and themselves. Take the pressure off. <3
